Hanoi – Moc Chau Road

An incomparable beauty between the mountains
It is about 180 kilometers from Hanoi to Moc Chau on National Highway 6 towards the province of Son La and Dien Bien. Overall, National Highway 6 is well built with two wide lanes and a beautiful surface. Motorcycle trips will take about four hours, including the Kem and Cun slopes at mid-term. They are not very dangerous, but you should always be calm and cautious when driving, as you may not be familiar with these suddenly-pitched terrain in the northwestern region of Vietnam.
After passing the slopes, you will arrive at Cao Phong, a charming town in Hoa Binh province, renowned throughout the world for its distinctive local oranges. More interestingly, if you travel during the production season, these orange gardens will be even more beautiful with their ripe fruit and pleasant scent of citrus. Be more cautious on this track as there are often police officers stationed here to check your speed and motorcycle papers.

Now you have before you Muong Khen, Tan Lake and Thung Khe Pass, which are considered to be one of Vietnam’s most spectacular loops. They act as borders between steep mountain ranges and the vast abyss. You will enter a picturesque scene of lush green forest, pretty houses on stilts of the ethnic group and a soft touch of foaming clouds above. It is very likely that there will be fog in this area during the winter, so drive more carefully and pay attention to the roads so you do not get lost. In the middle of the pass, you will find many small local markets selling wild orchid flowers of various colors and the iconic snack of this region, steamed corn. Located at the foot of Thung Khe pass, the Mai Chau valley is an extremely photogenic scene. You can also take a short break here to recharge your energy for the remaining route. After that, you will meet another track having a regular police checkpoint – the village of Long Luong. Continue for 20 kilometers and Moc Chau is right in front of you.

When to go: Hanoi – Moc Chau Road

The landscape on the path of Moc Chau has a seasonal beauty, so you can visit it at any time of the year. Choose your favorite scene, pack your bags and you’re ready to go! There are several distinct seasons.

From October to February is the season of mustard green flowers and wild sunflower with intense yellow color. Before and during the holidays of Vietnam in Tet, peach blossoms and plum trees will bloom everywhere. They will beautifully cover Moc Chau in white like a snowy mountain.
In March, you will discover a pink flower theme with a tree blossom, or simply a hoa ban in Vietnamese. There is even a song written and performed by one of our famous rock bands on this beautiful flower.

The plants will produce fruits from April to August in relatively cool weather, which will allow them to escape the heat of Hanoi. This season does not give too much flowers, but you can still see a wonderful fishing and plum scene everywhere.
